OMSF Receives NSF POSE Grant

OMSF received an NSF grant worth $1.5 million over a 2-year period to create resources to better support open source projects in molecular sciences and their communities.

We have great news to share – OMSF just received an NSF POSE grant!

We received $1.5 million over a 2-year period to create resources to better support open source projects in molecular sciences and their communities. You can find the full proposal here, but in short, we plan to:

  • Develop a molecular sciences OSE playbook – a combination of various legal templates, onboarding guides and training materials;
  • Provide technical solutions to improve software quality and security, and
  • Improve organizational framework for hosting large, distributed and collaborative research software projects.

As the first time awardee, we had to go through an extensive review process. We are proud that OMSF was recognized by the NSF as a lean, effective administrative unit capable of managing federal grants and industry funding. To our programs, partners, and community, thank you for your continued support.

We’ll share more information over the next few months through this newsletter as we start working towards our goals – if you want to stay tuned for this and similar news, subscribe! We will also start seeking new employees and contributors to work on the grant objectives. If you feel passionate about better research software, development practices, and knowledge sharing, please reach out to info@omsf.io – we’d love to hear from you!

About OMSF:
OMSF was founded in March 2021 to establish, manage, and streamline multi-institutional collaborations and open source projects in molecular sciences. We recognize the need for improved coordination and management of people, resources, and assets associated with distributed infrastructure projects to achieve better outcomes for our entire ecosystem. Our award seeks to address these challenges.

About NSF POSE:
POSE stands for Pathways to Open Source Ecosystems. The NSF believes that open source ecosystems (OSEs) have demonstrated a strong potential to catalyze innovation and creation of new technology solutions to problems of national and societal importance. POSE program seeks to support the formation of new OSE managing organizations based on an existing open-source product or class of products, whereby each organization is responsible for the creation and management of processes and infrastructure needed for the efficient and secure development and maintenance of an OSE. Being that organization for the open source ecosystem in molecular sciences is the core of OMSF’s mission.
